2010 scholarship recipient, Canaan West, shared her experiences as she begins her freshman year in Wisconsin:

“Carleton works on the trimester system, and the typical workload for students there is three full credit classes per term, three terms per year. Fall term, I took French 101, African Music, and German Literature (taught in English). My most exciting course was definitely African Music. We studied various genres of music from all across Africa, everything from the Medicine Dance of the San people to the more modern collaborative works of Paul Simon with the people of Zimbabwe. In addition to learning about the music, the class also included an applied section. In this applied section, my peers and I learned how to play various African instruments, including several types of drums and an instrument known as the karimba – described by Americans as a “thumb piano.” At the end of the first half of the applied section, I also learned how to do an African dance performed to a drum piece similar to what we had learned to play in class. It was wonderful.
Carleton has many more traditions and I am so excited that I decided to go out of state for college (and that I picked Carleton) because I have learned so much about the way people in other parts of the country live, and I have met so many new and exciting people! I thank the Voices Foundation for their scholarship which has helped me be able to do this!”
